Ubuntu – Xubuntu 20.04 – fix black screen after resume screensaver on thinkpad T410
Running the latest Ubuntu or Xubuntu 20.04 LTS, I faced an issue where the laptop would not resume properly after sleep or screen saver, or lid close.
Screen would remain black, not showing GUI, and I did read it happened for some at boot time as well.
Was pretty annoying, especially that deactivating all the power saving and lock screen did not avoid the issue when closing the lid.
Thankfully, after some frustration, I’ve found this forum thread :

Basically, intel chipset based laptops, especially with i915 series have this issue with the latest kernels.
To fix the issue, run the following :
sudo echo "options i915 enable_psr=0" >> /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf
PSR (Panel Self Refresh) has a bug which trigger this issue.
Some stated they use as workaround an external screen so as the laptop wakes up on external screen, yet not ideal. The solution above fixed the issue !
You’ll have to reboot for it to be applied, as basically this is specifying an option to the module (driver in linux), that is set when driver is loaded at boot.
The file i915.conf created, will be picked at boot time, as an option for the module i915 loaded on the machine.
You can use the command « lsmod » as root or « sudo lsmod » to check if your machine use the i915 driver.
I hope this will help, it was quit annoying and frustrating, having to kill window manager or reboot via CTRL+ALT+F1 and fighting back on CTRL+ALT+F7 was less than ideal.
